Boone is the administrative seat of Watauga County. It is located high up in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the border with Tennessee, at an elevation of 3,333 feet (1,015 meters).

Boone is the home of Appalachian State University. The town was named for American pioneer and explorer Daniel Boone and hosts an outdoor amphitheatre drama every summer titled Horn in the West, portraying the British settlement of the area during the American Revolutionary War.
